As many of you know, SUCCESS! period and the philosophy around SUCCESS! period is changing this school year. As a part of our instructional day, SUCCESS! is an integral part of our instructional program, allowing teachers and students to meet on a daily basis for both intervention AND enrichment opportunities.
Different than in the past, SUCCESS! will be used more consistently as a way to both intervene and extend learning in a more timely basis for the following purposes:
- To give students opportunities to receive extra help in their classes
- To give students opportunities to redo/retake assessments
- To give students opportunities to participate in enrichment activities
- To give students opportunities for time to study/work on assignments
- To give students opportunities to explore other interests, participate in extra-curricular activities, learn from other teachers.
So, what are the practical changes for SUCCESS! 2.0? Here is a list of differences:
- ALL students will attend a SUCCESS! workshop or activity EVERY DAY.
- Meaning that SUCCESS! is mandatory for ALL STUDENTS, not just students with a D or F
- Students will sign up through our new FlexTime Manager system for the workshops they would like to attend.
- Students can choose a different workshop each day, or choose the same one each day
- Teachers can request (require) students to attend their SUCCESS! activity INSTEAD of their chosen activity.
- Teachers will request students who need additional help in their class
- If a teacher requests (requires) a student for SUCCESS!, the student's schedule will change in the FlexTime Manager and they will be required to attend that workshop.
WHAT ABOUT MY EXTENDED LUNCH PERIOD?!
Extended lunch is now considered to be a SUCCESS! activity that must be selected by students who are eligible. Students who are requested (required) by their teachers will not have the opportunity to attend extended lunch periods.
The following new guidelines have been set up for extended lunch starting this school year:
- Freshmen will NOT have "Extended Lunch" as an option at any point during the school year, but they will have the option to select study hall or other preferred enrichment activities.
- Sophomores will be able to select "Extended Lunch" but not until quarter 3 of the school year.
- Juniors will be allowed to select "Extended Lunch" as a SUCCESS! activity all year.
- Seniors will be able to choose "Extended Lunch" or "Off-campus Lunch" as one of their SUCCESS! Activities.
Also new this year, food during the extended lunch period will NOT be served for the first 15 minutes of the Extended Lunch period. STUDENTS MAY NOT GET FOOD BEFORE GOING TO THEIR SUCCESS! ACTIVITY.
All students on Extended Lunch will be required to check-in with a staff member and be marked "present" for Extended Lunch if that is what they have selected for their SUCCESS! activity. Students who do not check-in will be marked absent for SUCCESS! period.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T CHOOSE AN ACTIVITY FOR MY SUCCESS! PERIOD?
Any student who does not choose a SUCCESS! activity for the day will be sent to a "Catch-All" room and will not be allowed choice activities or Extended Lunch.
WHAT TYPE OF ACTIVITY OPTIONS WILL THERE BE DURING SUCCESS! PERIOD?
While activity types will vary from day-to-day and week-to-week, SUCCESS! activities will include some of the same opportunities that you are used to seeing, along with a menu of other interesting options. Teachers will publish activities, and you'll have the opportunity to select activities well in advance. Some of the activities will include the following:
- Get help from your teacher
- Redo/Retake an assessment
- Attend a career workshop
- Get some energy out in a physical activity
- Study/Work quietly in a study hall
- Attend a club or team meeting
- Participate in a counseling workshop
- Receive tutoring help from peer tutors
- Join a book club
- Learn a new skill such as art, music, computer programming, etc.
- Suggest an activity you'd like to see and we'll add it!
What is happening during the 2nd week of school during SUCCESS! period?
We want the opportunity to train all students on how you can access your teachers for make-up work, extra help, enrichment opportunities, and how students will be able to take advantage of other chosen activities during SUCCESS! For the week of August 12th to the 16th, ALL STUDENTS will report to their Advisory teacher to learn about the new SUCCESS! 2.0, and get some training on how to sign up for your SUCCESS! period activities through our new computerized system.
We are excited about the new opportunities that students will have in the coming year during our SUCCESS! period.
After the week of training, students will have the opportunity to use the new FlexTime Manager system to request activities of their choice during the 3rd week of school. Students will attend that activity of choice unless a teacher requests them. Students will be aware of where they are supposed to be each day as they will be sent an email each morning detailing where they are supposed to be during that day's SUCCESS!
What happens if I just don't show up to my assigned SUCCESS! class?
SUCCESS! is a required attendance period during the school day, even if you have Extended Lunch or Off-Campus Lunch. Students who do not show up to their pre-scheduled SUCCESS! period will be marked as absent, and all of the regular consequences for cutting class apply.
Our hope is that this new procedure for SUCCESS! will help students and teachers have opportunities to extend their learning and ensure the success of all students on our campus. We encourage feedback about our SUCCESS! period. Students will have the opportunity to provide feedback throughout the school year as we continue to develop SUCCESS! period into a valuable learning opportunity for all students.
