Attendance Procedures Clarification

Did you know that attendance in school is one of the most important factors that impact student success?  Think about the following facts about school attendance:
  • Research shows that missing as few as 18 days in a school year negatively affects a student's academic performance.
  • Over 7 million students in the U.S. miss nearly a month of school each year.
  • The academic impact of missing school is the same whether the absences are excused or unexcused.
The MHHS administration is looking to cut down on the amount of absences, especially those that are unexcused absences.  We recently sent home a lengthy email to let all parents know about some of the ways we are going to emphasize the importance of attendance, and cut down on unexcused absences.  Here's a "Reader's Digest" version of what the letter says:

ATTENDANCE POLICIES
  • ANY and ALL absences and tardies MUST be cleared by a parent within 72 hours of the absence.  ALL absences after this time become unexcused.
  • Any student who acquires over 18 days of excused absences will be required to bring a doctor's note for future excused absences
  • The following absences CANNOT be excused
    • Vacations
    • Oversleeping
    • Parent dropped of student late
    • Car trouble
    • Any absence that is not cleared within 72 hours.
    • CLICK HERE for the 10 excusable reasons per California State Law
CONSEQUENCES FOR UNEXCUSED ABSENCES
  • 1 or more unexcused absences in any give day result in Saturday School
  • Students with more than 4 Saturday Schools lose extra-curricular sport or activity privledges, work permits, and Seniors can lose off-campus lunch privileges.
SUCCESS! ATTENDANCE
  • Students assigned to SUCCESS! are required to attend every day until their grade(s) get up to a B.
  • Students who do not attend SUCCESS! will be assigned Detention on the very next school day.

MHHS Partnership with San Francisco Public Library

MHHS is proud to announce that we have created a partnership with the San Francisco Public Library to gain access to their online databases and the materials and resources of this world class library system.  Last week and this week, students have been going online during their Advisory class to fill out the application for the San Francisco Public Library.  Students will be bringing home a signature form that must be signed by the student and the parent to receive their public library card.  This card and account will allow students access to research databases, online learning resources, and information that will help them as they become college and career ready during their high school years.

Our new librarian Mrs. Hecht has forged this partnership, and will be working to process the paperwork and obtain the library cards for students.  Please look for the form to come home this week, sign the form, and have your student return it to their Advisory teacher, or in to the main office for our librarian to process.

Trunk or Treat Community Service Opportunity

Did you remember that ALL MHHS students are required to log 40 hours of community service during the time that they attend our school.  If you have not done ANY community service, it's time to start.  Many of our students did service in Tracy a couple of weeks ago painting fire hydrants in the city of Tracy.  Together we painted over 1500 fire hydrants!

Now there is another community service opportunity.  A local car dealership is running a "Trunk-or-Treat" event at their car dealership to provide a safe Halloween activity for children in the Tracy and Mountain House areas.  They need 32 volunteers for this event.  So sign up, please visit the JustServe.org website to sign up.  Here is a direct link:  CLICK HERE

Students and their parents are welcome to come serve together.

As always, ALL community service opportunities for our students are posted on the JustServe.org website.  Please visit the site frequently to look for opportunities to serve your community.

NAMI Club at MHHS

Mountain House High School is thrilled to announce that we are forming a NAMI on Campus
High School (NCHS) Club! NAMI is the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and NCHS is a program designed by NAMI California (NAMI CA). NAMI CA provides support, advocacy, education and services to families and loved ones whose lives are touched by mental illness. NCHS is a mental health awareness club for students and teachers on high school campuses. The purpose is to create a dialogue on campus about mental health and well-being to help eliminate the stigma of mental illness. It is not a support or therapy group.  Students are encouraged to join and learn more about mental health, warning signs of mental illness, how to seek help for themselves or others, and how to be a supportive friend to someone experiencing a mental illness.

Research shows that 1 out of every 5 U.S. adults have a diagnosable mental illness, and that 50% of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14 and 75% by age 24. With this in mind, we would like to, draw your attention to the fact the NAMI website posts information about specific mental illnesses, their signs and symptoms and how those suffering can get help.  Please visit https://www.nami.org/Learn-More/Mental-Health-Conditions for more information.

Each Mind Matters (EMM) is California’s mental health movement and another organization that NAMI CA has partnered with to help spread mental health awareness. Their goal is to unite people wanting to stand up to stigma and create a community that feels safe and supported in reaching out for help. For information about EMM, please visit www.eachmindmatters.org

For local resources and support, your local NAMI Affiliate can help connect you to services in your community.   NAMI San Joaquin County (209) 468 -3755

If you have any questions about NCHS, NAMI CA or FEP, please contact NAMI California at (916) 567-0163.

Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences

Sign up for your conference time slot here:  http://tinyurl.com/MHHSConf1718

Monday October 16th is the date for this year’s Parent-Teacher-Student conferences.  This will be an opportunity for parents and students to come to the school and sit down for brief conferences
with your child’s teachers.  We recommend that if your student is struggling with their grade in any of their classes that you plan on attending this conference.

We would like to take this opportunity to provide information to you regarding the format of our Parent-Teacher-Student conferences.  The format for these conferences is different than what parents may be familiar with at the elementary school level.  Conferences begin at 1:00pm on Monday the 16th in the Large Gym.  We require that parents sign up for a time-slot to come to conferences.  We encourage you to bring your student with you so that when you conference with the teacher, all individuals involved in the success of the student are present.  THERE WILL BE NO CONFERENCES ON TUESDAY THE 17TH.  Tuesday is an early release day where all students and teachers go home early due to the conferences on Monday night.

When you arrive to conferences at your predetermined time, conferences will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  Teachers will will be sitting at individual tables around the Large Gym.  Parents and students will line up behind the teachers they want to conference with.  Conferences in this format are brief 3-5 minute conversations with your child’s teacher in regards to their progress in the class.  Your child’s report card will have been mailed home and available on Aeries Parent Portal previous to parent-teacher conferences, so you may want to focus on the courses where your child struggles the most.  Some things you may want to address in these brief conferences include the following:
Assignments/Missing assignments
Assessments/Tests
Student in-class participation/behavior
Strengths
Areas for improvement
If your brief conference is not enough time to address all of the concerns you may have with your child’s teacher, you may need to schedule a longer conference with your child’s teacher in order to discuss strategies and solutions for your students.  Our aim is to answer as many questions about your child’s progress as possible during the parent-teacher-student conference.

Administrators and Counselors will also be available during Parent-Teacher-Student conferences to discuss your child’s progress and answer any questions you may have about your student’s education here at Mountain House High School.  To sign up for your conference time please visit our sign-up link at http://tinyurl.com/MHHSConf1718

Biomedical Science Students Visit Delta College

On September 12, 2017 the Principles of Biomedical Science class took advantage of an opportunity to visit the Delta College Campus in Stockton.  Students experienced a guided tour with hands on activities within Health Science (Nursing, Psychiatric Technician and Speech Pathology) and the Electron Microscopy labs.  After these exciting activities they enjoyed a lunch in the school cafeteria.  Marisol Hernandez, Delta College Outreach and Marketing Specialist, then presented information about post high school education and Delta College opportunities including the Transfer Admission Guarantee (TAG)  programs with CSU-Sacramento, UC Davis, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz.  The day was rounded out with  a campus tour where students were able to see the other academic areas and extracurricular activities offered by Delta College.   It was an amazing day organized by MHHS teacher, Kris Olson in conjunction with  Delta College Outreach Specialist, Marisol Hernandez.  One student reflection on the day is included below:

“I saw several interesting things during the field trip in Delta College. One of the interesting things I saw in Delta College was a mannequin that doctors use for simulations. The interesting thing about this mannequin is that it can breathe, talk, have a pulse, and actually be treated. This mannequin makes it easy for doctors, future doctors, or other occupants in the medical field to perform simulations of various types of treatments. This also gave me an idea of how many doctors, future doctors, and occupants in the medical field prepare themselves for treatments and operations.

Another interesting thing I saw in Delta was videos of actual vocal chords in motion. I got to see different types of vocal chords such as regular vocal chords, vocal chords with cancer, and vocal chords with nodes. The class and I discussed the differences in how the person in each video sounds and how the vocal chords looked.

In addition to these two things, I also learned how to wash my hands. First, I put this liquid called, "Glo Germ", which basically shows you how germs spread. Afterwards, I lathered and rinsed the "Glo Germ" off my hands. Next, I saw how clean my hands were with a black light which shows the area your hand has germs in and the results were that my hands needed to be a bit more cleaner. Finally, I went back to the sink to wash my hands. These were some of the interesting things I saw in Delta College.” (MHHS student)

Back To School General Session Slides

Back To School Night was on August 25, 2017 and started with a general session in the large gym at 6:30 P.M.  We understand that the traffic coming back into Mountain House prevented a large percentage of our parent population from attending Back To School Night last night.  For those of you who were unable to make it to our general session, the slides for the general session are here in this post.  If you have specific questions for your child's teachers, please do not hesitate to contact them.

Back To School Night

Date: Thursday August 24th
Time:  6:30 P.M.
Place:  Large Gym and Classrooms
Back To School Night will start off by meeting in the gym, where you will get a chance to meet the school principal Mr. Ben Fobert and Vice Principals Joni Hellstrom and Athena Duran.  They will walk you through how to access Canvas, the resource used to view your student’s grades, assignments and much more. You will also get an overview of student centered blended learning and mastery based learning.
The rest of the evening you will have the opportunity to attend each of your student’s classrooms, meet the teachers, and learn about the goals and expectations for each class. Back to school night is a great way to stay connected with your student’s education.   Students will be sending you a text or email on Thursday morning during their advisory period with their class schedule and room numbers so that you can be sure to get to all of the right classes.  We look forward to seeing you on Thursday Night starting at 6:30 P.M. in the gym.
