Day of Service: JUST SERVE!

COMMUNITY SERVICE ALERT FOR STUDENTS!

Did you remember that you need to have 40 hours of community service logged by the time you graduate?  That's 10 hours of community service for each year that you attend MHHS!

Did you know that the City of Tracy is holding a Day of Service on September 21st, with multiple opportunities for individuals and clubs/organizations to sign up for?

Did you know that MHHS uses the website justserve.org to post and direct students to community service opportunities in our area?

Go online RIGHT NOW to sign up for this community service opportunity, and other opportunities that are posted on a regular basis.  Here's how:

  • Go to justserve.org
  • Click "sign in/register" at the top of the screen to create your account or sign in.
  • Search for our zip code "95391" in the search bar
  • Change the search radius to 25 miles to get the best results for our area.
  • Click on the volunteer opportunity that interests you most.  Look for the posts that say "Day of Service"  The opportunities include planting Sod at the sports part, landscaping a berm along a street in Tracy, or sorting toys and books for Brighter Christmas.

Sign up with your friends and family, or sign up with your club or school organization, and make a community service day out of it.

NEW--Double Block Early-Release Days

What:  NEW Early Release Double Block
When:  Thursday/Friday, 8/29-8/30

You'll notice something different about many of the early release days at MHHS this year.  In past years, early release days necessitated us to shorten each of the 7 periods in the day to 31 minutes, giving students and teachers very little time to interact on early release days.  This school year, early release days are going to change to a two-day block-period style schedule.  This new block schedule model will allow teachers to have a longer period of time to spend with each class, increasing the ability to provide effective instruction in an extended class period.  Additionally, on these early release days, teachers will have the opportunity to engage in two days of additional professional development and planning in the afternoons.  Students will see their teachers once over these two early-release days.

Our first Double Block Early Release Schedule will be this week on the 29th and 30th of August.  Please refer to our Early Release Schedules on the Bell Schedule Document available on our website HERE.

SUCCESS! 2.0 Implementation Update

As you may know or may have heard, SUCCESS! 2.0 is well underway for the new school year.  We have a new online system for students to choose their SUCCESS! activities on a daily basis, and we are hoping our new procedures address the needs we have seen through the data we have collected over the past several years.  Ultimately our goal is to get to a place where all students have the support they need to succeed in ALL of their classes.  Today's extended advisory lesson gave us the opportunity to respond to all of the feedback (good and bad) we have been getting from students.  Today's Advisory took the time to answer questions like:

  • Are we doing the new SUCCESS! 2.0 all year?
  • Why do "A" students have to go to SUCCESS!?
  • Why do I have to schedule a time to go see my teacher?
  • What is Catch-All?
  • Why don't the classes have a better description?
  • Do I earn credit for SUCCESS!?
In addition to answering these questions about SUCCESS!, students were notified of their opportunity to sign up for a future SUCCESS! activity called "SUCCES! 2.0 Focus Group" where students will be able to provide feedback and share ideas about how to make SUCCESS! better.

If you are interested in the answers to the above questions, as well as the other instruction given to students during today's Advisory lesson about SUCCESS!, see the slide presentation below:

Course Balancing and Schedule Changes

In an effort to provide excellent learning outcomes for all students this school year, MHHS has been authorized to alleviate overcrowding in our courses by adding additional sections to the master schedule. This means that some students will see a change in their class schedule to accommodate the decrease in class sizes and the addition of class sections. If your course schedule has changed, the new schedule will go into effect on Wednesday 8/21/19. Students who receive a schedule change due to this process will receive an email with their new schedule. Students will also be able to see their changed schedule in Aeries. The balancing of these classes and the addition of extra sections will help us to provide better educational outcomes for our students.

Sincerely,

MHHS Administration

Addressing Concerns: SUCCESS! 2.0

As part of our roll-out of SUCCESS! 2.0, the administration anticipated the concerns that students and families might have shared with the new procedures.  As such, we have built-in feedback loops for students to voice their concerns over the shift in practice and procedure.

Here's what we've done thus far to roll-out SUCCESS! 2.0:

  • Monday 8/12 we explained the purpose and expectations of SUCCESS! and provided an opportunity for students to share concerns that were sent back to the administration.
  • Tuesday 8/13 we logged students into the FlexTime Manager system that will manage SUCCESS! choices and assignments and trained them on how to use it.
  • Wednesday 8/14 (Today) we will be addressing the concerns that students sent into administration through their teachers on Monday.  Many of these questions will be addressed in class and in this newsletter in detail.
  • Thursday 8/15 students will go into the FlexTime Manager and choose their activities for next week's SUCCESS! periods.  There will also be another opportunity at this time to provide additional feedback to the administration.
  • Friday 8/16 we will ensure that all students have a full schedule of activities chosen and answer any remaining questions before we fully implement SUCCESS!
Below we will be addressing many of the concerns that students have raised over the past couple of days:

HOW IS SUCCESS! PERIOD DEFINED?
While many students and parents may have believed that SUCCESS! was part of the lunch period in the past, SUCCESS! period has always been part of the instructional day at MHHS and has never been "free time" for students.  Some students in the past have been able to choose free-time activities like extended lunch, but the time period has always been a mandatory period of time where students can access both enrichment and intervention.

HOW WILL MY VOICE BE HEARD?
  • Student voices at MHHS matter!  All student feedback that has been collected during SUCCESS! this week has been given to administration and has been considered and responded to
  • Students will receive a feedback form this week that will come directly from students to administration.
  • Some students started a petition on the internet this week, and the administration wants students to know that we value feedback, but feedback from an outside petition will not be heard.  If you want your voice to be heard by the administration, please share your thoughts through the forms sent to you by the school.  Your opinion counts!
IS SUCCESS MANDATORY?
YES!  SUCCESS! is a mandatory attendance period for all students on campus.  Whether you sign up for a preferred activity like study hall, an enrichment class, or whether a teacher requests you to attend SUCCESS! in their classroom, SUCCESS! is Mandatory for the activity that you are signed up for.  Even students in Extended Lunch will need to sign up and be marked present for SUCCESS! period.  We're working to make it easy to be marked present during this time.

WHAT IF THE SECTION I WANT IS FULL?
If a section or session for SUCCESS! is full already, you'll need to choose something else to participate in during the SUCCESS! section.  SUCCESS! sections will be released to students once a week and students should sign up early to secure their spot.

WHAT IF I FORGET TO SIGN UP FOR SOMETHING I WANT?
We will be reminding students in Advisory every week to be sure to go in and choose their SUCCESS! activities for the week.  Teachers will be talking about it regularly in class.  You can set up alerts in your google calendar, or on your personal phone so that you don't forget.  Students who neglect to sign up for something will be automatically assigned to the "Catch-All" section.

WHAT IS CATCH-ALL AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
Catch-all is not a study hall, it is a room where students who don't pick SUCCESS! sections will be sent.  Students in this room will be extremely limited with the options they have during this time.  If students intend to use SUCCESS! period as a study-hall, they should sign up for study hall sections.  In the Catch-All room, adults will talk to students about why they aren't picking anything and encourage them to pick an activity for the next day.

HOW WILL I BE ABLE TO EAT LUNCH?
This week, all students have been getting through the line with over 10 munites to spare at the end of the 30 minute lunch period.  On Tuesday, the lunch lines were completely clear 19 minutes before the end of lunch.  Starting next week, lunch lines will be staggered because many students will be eligible to choose extended lunch as an activity and will get their lunches before the remainder of students release at the end of SUCCESS!

WHEN WILL OFF-CAMPUS LUNCH BEGIN FOR SENIORS?
Lammersville Unified Board Policy states that seniors can begin going off-campus for lunch after the first grading period, with parent permission.  You will be able to choose extended lunch starting next week until the end of the first grading period.  You will be notified closer to the grading period about how to get the permission slip and where to turn it in once it’s signed.  Please note that students will not be able to extend their off-campus lunch period by using their 4th or 5th period Flex period.  Students may ONLY be off-campus during the hour-long SUCCESS! and Lunch Periods.  Students leaving early or coming back late will have off-campus privileges revoked.

WHAT RULES ARE THERE FOR EXTENDED LUNCH PERIOD?
  • Only Juniors and Seniors are eligible at the beginning of the year.  Sophomores will be allowed to choose extended lunch starting the 3rd quarter (3/10/20)
  • There is no limit to the number of students who can sign up for Extended Lunch.
  • If you sign up for extended lunch and a teacher requests you for SUCCESS! period, you must attend the teacher requested SUCCESS! section.
  • Students MUST check-in for extended lunch period with campus supervisors in the MPR in order to be marked present for SUCCESS!  Students who do not check-in will be marked absent.
WHEN CAN I SIGN UP FOR SUCCESS!
SUCCESS! sections will be published a week in advance on a specific day each week.  Students can go in and request their sections for the whole week at that time.  Students will also have the opportunity to change their chosen activity as many times as they want until 8:00 am of the day of the activity.  REMEMBER!!!  If a teacher requests you after you've chosen a preferred activity, you will be REQUIRED to attend that teacher requested section.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN MORE THAN ONE TEACHER REQUESTS ME?
There will be priority days during the week where teachers will be able to request you, and others cannot.  If it is not a priority day, and more than one teacher requests you, the first teacher that requests you will get you.

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO STAY WITH A TEACHER WHO REQUESTS ME?  IS IT FOR A WHOLE GRADING PERIOD?
Attendance in SUCCESS! is no longer tied to grading periods.  It will be up to the teacher to determine how long they may need you.  They may request you for multiple days, or only for one day to help you out with a specific skill or standard.  Ideally, you will stay with the teacher until you make up the assessment, master the concept, or complete the missing work.

WHY CAN'T FRESHMEN CHOOSE EXTENDED LUNCH AND SOPHOMORES CAN'T CHOOSE IT UNTIL 3RD QUARTER?
After reviewing schoolwide data, we found that our 9th and 10th-grade students struggled the most with consistently completing work on time and mastering the content for their classes.  We want to give both Freshmen and Sophomores a structure that helps them to prioritize study, work completion, and mastery of standards.  While students in these grades may not be able to choose extended lunch, they will still be able to choose other activities such as homework hall, physical activity options, study areas, and other fun extension opportunities if they are not requested by teachers.

CAN I ATTEND MORE THAN ONE SUCCESS! ACTIVITY IN A DAY?
No.  SUCCESS! activities are designed to take the full 30 minutes of SUCCESS! period.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I SKIP A SUCCESS! ACTIVITY OR IF I DON'T CHECK-IN FOR EXTENDED LUNCH?
Teachers in SUCCESS! sections and campus supervisors and administrators will be taking roll on FlexTime manager every day.  Skipping SUCCESS! activities or forgetting to check-in for Extended Lunch is the same as skipping any other class and the consequences will be the same.  When you sign up for an activity, you will be on a roster for that activity.  Not showing up will give you an absence on your attendance record.

WHAT IF THE SCHOOL MAKES LAST MINUTE CHANGES TO THE SUCCESS! SCHEDULE?
The FlexTime Manager system will notify you by text or email if your schedule changes.

DO I HAVE TO USE MY CHROMEBOOK TO SIGN UP FOR SUCCESS! ACTIVITIES?
No!  The FlexTime Manager website works on any device including on phones and mobile devices.  You can log in on your phone or any other device just as easily as you can on your Chromebook.

WHY DO PEOPLE WHO ARE ALREADY PASSING THEIR CLASSES NEED TO GO TO SUCCESS!?
Two main reasons:
  1. SUCCESS! is an intervention and enrichment period of time that is part of the academic day.
  2. SUCCESS! has ALWAYS been mandatory
In the past, we only required students with D's or F's to mandatorily meet with their teacher on a daily basis.  In this way, students who are struggling will still meet with their teachers on a regular basis during SUCCESS!  Also, students who were passing their classes were also able to get extra help from their teachers during SUCCESS!  Students will still be able to do this during the SUCCESS! period, but will have to schedule their time wisely.  Additionally, students who wanted to watch movies, study quietly, finish their homework, or hang out with their friends could do that during SUCCESS! if they weren't required to visit a teacher.  It will be the same this year.

FINAL THOUGHTS
Implementing SUCCESS! 2.0 is going to be a process.  You attend a high school where the administration, teachers, and staff are committed to all students learning at high levels.  We want to create supports to achieve this for all of you.  You matter!  The way we have been running SUCCESS! previously has not met our goals and expectations for this instructional time.

We commit to ongoing feedback and data collection from students and teachers to find the best ways to make SUCCESS! work for everyone.

See the slide deck from our Advisory lesson below:

Hot Weather

You may already know that today's weather is forecasted to be over 100 degrees by 1:00 PM. We are keeping a close watch on the weather/heat as the day progresses and will take action when needed. The San Joaquin Real-Time Air Advisory Network (RAAN) website (http://www.valleyair.org/programs/raan/raan_index.htm?x=TracyAP) will be used to determine the real-time conditions and the district will follow the Real-Time Outdoor Activity Risk (ROAR) guidelines pertaining to recess, physical education, athletics, and all outdoor-related activities. The ROAR guidelines can be found by visiting the website listed above. Please be assured that student safety is our number one priority.

Specifics about SUCCESS! 2.0

As many of you know, SUCCESS! period and the philosophy around SUCCESS! period is changing this school year.  As a part of our instructional day, SUCCESS! is an integral part of our instructional program, allowing teachers and students to meet on a daily basis for both intervention AND enrichment opportunities.

Different than in the past, SUCCESS! will be used more consistently as a way to both intervene and extend learning in a more timely basis for the following purposes:

  • To give students opportunities to receive extra help in their classes
  • To give students opportunities to redo/retake assessments
  • To give students opportunities to participate in enrichment activities
  • To give students opportunities for time to study/work on assignments
  • To give students opportunities to explore other interests, participate in extra-curricular activities, learn from other teachers.
So, what are the practical changes for SUCCESS! 2.0?  Here is a list of differences:
  • ALL students will attend a SUCCESS! workshop or activity EVERY DAY.
    • Meaning that SUCCESS! is mandatory for ALL STUDENTS, not just students with a D or F
  • Students will sign up through our new FlexTime Manager system for the workshops they would like to attend.
    • Students can choose a different workshop each day, or choose the same one each day
  • Teachers can request (require) students to attend their SUCCESS! activity INSTEAD of their chosen activity.
    • Teachers will request students who need additional help in their class
    • If a teacher requests (requires) a student for SUCCESS!, the student's schedule will change in the FlexTime Manager and they will be required to attend that workshop.
WHAT ABOUT MY EXTENDED LUNCH PERIOD?!

Extended lunch is now considered to be a SUCCESS! activity that must be selected by students who are eligible.  Students who are requested (required) by their teachers will not have the opportunity to attend extended lunch periods.

The following new guidelines have been set up for extended lunch starting this school year:
  • Freshmen will NOT have "Extended Lunch" as an option at any point during the school year, but they will have the option to select study hall or other preferred enrichment activities.
  • Sophomores will be able to select "Extended Lunch" but not until quarter 3 of the school year.
  • Juniors will be allowed to select "Extended Lunch" as a SUCCESS! activity all year.
  • Seniors will be able to choose "Extended Lunch" or "Off-campus Lunch" as one of their SUCCESS! Activities.
Also new this year, food during the extended lunch period will NOT be served for the first 15 minutes of the Extended Lunch period.  STUDENTS MAY NOT GET FOOD BEFORE GOING TO THEIR SUCCESS! ACTIVITY.

All students on Extended Lunch will be required to check-in with a staff member and be marked "present" for Extended Lunch if that is what they have selected for their SUCCESS! activity.  Students who do not check-in will be marked absent for SUCCESS! period.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I DON'T CHOOSE AN ACTIVITY FOR MY SUCCESS! PERIOD?

Any student who does not choose a SUCCESS! activity for the day will be sent to a "Catch-All" room and will not be allowed choice activities or Extended Lunch.

WHAT TYPE OF ACTIVITY OPTIONS WILL THERE BE DURING SUCCESS! PERIOD?

While activity types will vary from day-to-day and week-to-week, SUCCESS! activities will include some of the same opportunities that you are used to seeing, along with a menu of other interesting options.  Teachers will publish activities, and you'll have the opportunity to select activities well in advance.  Some of the activities will include the following:
  • Get help from your teacher
  • Redo/Retake an assessment
  • Attend a career workshop
  • Get some energy out in a physical activity
  • Study/Work quietly in a study hall
  • Attend a club or team meeting
  • Participate in a counseling workshop
  • Receive tutoring help from peer tutors
  • Join a book club
  • Learn a new skill such as art, music, computer programming, etc.
  • Suggest an activity you'd like to see and we'll add it!
What is happening during the 2nd week of school during SUCCESS! period?

We want the opportunity to train all students on how you can access your teachers for make-up work, extra help, enrichment opportunities, and how students will be able to take advantage of other chosen activities during SUCCESS!  For the week of August 12th to the 16th, ALL STUDENTS will report to their Advisory teacher to learn about the new SUCCESS! 2.0, and get some training on how to sign up for your SUCCESS! period activities through our new computerized system.
We are excited about the new opportunities that students will have in the coming year during our SUCCESS! period.

After the week of training, students will have the opportunity to use the new FlexTime Manager system to request activities of their choice during the 3rd week of school.  Students will attend that activity of choice unless a teacher requests them.  Students will be aware of where they are supposed to be each day as they will be sent an email each morning detailing where they are supposed to be during that day's SUCCESS!

What happens if I just don't show up to my assigned SUCCESS! class?
SUCCESS! is a required attendance period during the school day, even if you have Extended Lunch or Off-Campus Lunch.  Students who do not show up to their pre-scheduled SUCCESS! period will be marked as absent, and all of the regular consequences for cutting class apply.

Our hope is that this new procedure for SUCCESS! will help students and teachers have opportunities to extend their learning and ensure the success of all students on our campus.  We encourage feedback about our SUCCESS! period.  Students will have the opportunity to provide feedback throughout the school year as we continue to develop SUCCESS! period into a valuable learning opportunity for all students.

Attendance Procedures at MHHS

Hello MHHS students and families,

In an attempt to better support our students with attendance, the MHHS Administration would like to update all students and parents about the state and new school policies for absences and tardies.

All absences and tardies need to be cleared by a parent or guardian within 48 hours of the absence.  Parents/Guardians may not clear an absence or tardy after 48 hours have passed or it will become unexcused.  Please note that after a student acquires 5 days of excused absences, a doctor's note will be required to excuse any additional absences.

To clear a tardy or absence, you can send a detailed email to mhhsattendance@lammersvilleusd.net, use the attendance form found here or call (209) 836-7460.

In determining whether or not a tardy or absence is excused, MHHS follows CA Education Code guidelines for excused vs. unexcused absences.  We must follow these guidelines when coding absences or tardies in our system.

Excused Absence (found in CA Education Code 48205)

  1. Illness
  2. Family Funeral
  3. Quarantine
  4. Optometric, medical, or dental appointments (*Please make every effort to schedule appointments outside of the school day)
  5. Court appearance by subpoena (child)
  6. Participation in religious exercises

*Find the full list of 10 excusable reasons for absence from school in CA Ed Code here.

Examples of an Unexcused Absence

The following list details reasons that cannot be excused:

  1. Family Vacations and extended weekend trip
  2. Oversleeping
  3. Parent fault for being late or absent
  4. Car trouble
  5. Any absence which would normally be considered excused, but is not cleared by a parent/guardian or doctor's note within 48 hours of returning to school

*This list is not all-inclusive. If you have specific questions regarding unexcused absences, please contact the attendance office.

School Consequences for Unexcused Absences
Progressive discipline will come into effect for students who have 1 or more unexcused absence. Teachers will notify administration of unexcused absences.  The first offense will result in detention, the second offense will result in reflection room, and the third offense will result in Saturday School. Administration will contact parents in regard to assigned consequences. Students that continue to have unexcused absences will be referred to go through the SARB process.

In adherence to Administrative Regulation 5113.1(b) and Education Code 48260, a student will be identified as truant when the student accrues three full days or 18 single period unexcused absences from school.  At this point, a student enters the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) process:

Saturday school will be held on a regular basis. Failure to attend Saturday School will result in in-house suspension.

Students with more than 4 days of Saturday School will lose off-campus privileges including flex and lunch, extra-curricular privileges and their work permit.
Saturday School days are cumulative and will carry over from one school year to the next.
Students may reduce Saturday School days by attending Saturday School or by having 10 days of Perfect Attendance while serving 1 day of Saturday School which will result in 3 days of Saturday School served.  Students may not have tardies or absences to qualify for Perfect Attendance.  If you have obtained Perfect Attendance it is the student's responsibility to visit the attendance office to reduce days.

*Students will be notified if they have earned Saturday School and parents will be contacted by email.

* Your child’s attendance can be accessed through the Aeries Parent Portal which can be found on the front page of the school website or by clicking here. If you are having trouble accessing your account please call the school’s main number.

It is our intent to help students become more successful through consistent attendance in classes.

Thank you,
MHHS Administration

Wear Your ID Card!

What:  WEAR YOUR ID CARD
When:  All Day Every Day
Where:  Visible on your body

ID cards are our first line of defense in identifying who is on our campus.  With safety being a hot-button issue in our schools today, it is essential that we be able to identify our students at our school quickly and efficiently.  As a result, we are emphasizing the expectation for ALL of our students, faculty, and staff to wear their ID cards ALL of the time.

ID cards are also the method we use to identify where students should be at all times of the day.  Identifying information like Flex period, Senior Off-Campus Lunch, and ASB discounts are all a part of the ID here at MHHS.

The ID card must be worn and visible all day.  We continue to make this a huge school-wide effort as the importance of being able to identify anyone on campus at all times helps keep our campus safe.

If you have lost your ID, or it has been broken, please visit the main office for a replacement ASAP.

Back to School Night SAVE THE DATE

SAVE THE DATE
What:  Back to School Night
When:  August 22, 2019
Time:  6:30 P.M. to 8:30 P.M.

Save the Date for our 6th annual Back to School Night on August 22nd at 6:30 P.M.  For those of you new to Mountain House High School, there will be an opportunity for you to meet administrators and teachers on this important night.  You will visit every class and meet every teacher that your student has during this night.  Teachers will share briefly about their classrooms and expectations.  We encourage all of you to block out your calendars now.  More detailed information will follow in the coming weeks.

Welcome Back 2019-2020

On behalf of the entire Mustang Community, we welcome you back to the new school year.  With over 1560 students this school year, we are excited to be offering lots of exciting opportunities for our students and families as we continue growing our school community.  Please read through this newsletter article for the beginning of the year's news and information.

  • MUSTANG ROUNDUP--The first three days of school are "Mustang Roundup Days" and are early release days.  Students will finish each day this first week at 1:30 P.M.  Please refer to the Bell Schedule HERE for specifics on the schedule.
  • ADVISORY (0 Period)--You will notice that all students have a "0 Period" on their class schedule that meets only on Thursday.  Advisory (0 Period) Meets every Thursday after 2nd Period, and sometimes at other times on specific days.  Please refer to the Bell Schedule HERE for specific days and times where Advisory meets.
  • SCHOOL SUPPLIES--As you will notice, MHHS does not publish school supply lists.  For the most part, students will be using their Chromebooks, a notebook or two, and some pens and pencils.  Some classes may have specific supply needs, and teachers will communicate these needs to students in the first two weeks of school.
  • PE CLOTHING AND LOCK--Students who take PE are required to have PE clothing and a lock for their PE locker.  Students may purchase PE clothing from the school, or may purchase a blue shirt and black shorts or sweats on their own.  Please note that the student's name must be able to be written clearly and visibly on the outside of the shirt and shorts if you purchase it on your own.  Locks must be combination locks ONLY. Students WILL NOT dress out for the first day of school but will be required to dress out for PE EVERY DAY.
  • CLASS CONTRIBUTIONS--Due to the fact that we do not request school supplies, some courses at MHHS request a classroom contribution to defray the cost of materials and activities in the classroom.  Students enrolled in Science, Art, Photography, Video Productions, Culinary Arts, Biomed, and Engineering are asked to donate $35 per class to defray these costs.  Donations for these classes can be made at the ASB office or online at our Webstore HERE.
  • ID CARDS--Students are REQUIRED to wear their ID card EVERY DAY to school.  This is the main way that we identify who students are and where they should be during the school day.  Please encourage your student to wear their ID card on a lanyard or clip on the upper part of their clothing each day.  Students who lose their ID cards will be charged for a replacement.  If a student's ID card is damaged they can bring it to the ASB office for a free replacement.
We look forward to a great school year.  If you have questions or concerns, we encourage you to contact a member of our administrative team or faculty.  Our hope is to provide an Empowering, Personalized, Innovative, and Collaborative learning environment for your student for the duration of their high school years.
