A First for Mountain House DECA Team

In the past week, one of our DECA students, Rishabh Rai, placed 6th overall in the Western Region of the United States for competing in the Stock Market Game.  This is a DECA competitive element where DECA students from all over the country compete in a game where they need to make money by investing in a virtual stock market.  They are given $100,000 virtually to invest in the stock market. They have requirements to meet with investing in a variety of stocks, bonds, and other commodities and maintain a minimum balance in each.  The winners are determined by how much they grow the $100,000.

The top 25 in each region in the country get to attend the International DECA Competition to present their portfolios for awards and recognition.  Rishabh placed 6th out of 25 in our region. Only 15 students in California placed.  The states in the region are CA, WA, OR, and CO.

This is a first for our DECA chapter - our first student to place in the Stock Market Game and our first winner to go to DECA international competition!  Our DECA chapter just keeps getting better.

Join us in congratulating Rishabh Rai, and our DECA team for all of the great work they are doing!

National School Counseling Week

National School Counseling Week will be celebrated next week, from Feb 1-5th, 2021.  The purpose of this week is to focus attention on the unique contribution of school counselors and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do.

MHHS school counselors actively:

Help students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents.

Partner with parents/guardians as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today's world

Focus on positive ways to enhance students' academic, postsecondary, and social/emotional development

Work with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic, and optimistic aspirations for themselves.

School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master's degree in counseling.  The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.

Next week, MHHS will be highlighting and honoring one of our school counselors each day.  Please join us in celebrating the immeasurable impact our school counselors have on our students' achievement and development.

MHHS Academic Block

Many of you are familiar with the Block Letter Patch that is obtained by students after they are involved in participating in a Varsity Sport at our High School.  These patches are typically sewn onto a letterman jacket or sweater so that students can show their school pride, and show the pride of their accomplishments that include other pins, patches and awards they receive throughout high school.

What you probably don't know is that students can also receive a Block Letter Patch for their academic achievements.  Students who consistently obtain a 3.5 GPA or higher and participate in other activities like leadership, community service, sports, or academic teams can be eligible for this award as well.  Obtaining a Block Letter during high school represents a significant achievement on one or more areas of curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular activities.

Students who wish to obtain their Academic Block Letter should review the criteria for the block letter and determine if they meet all of the criteria for the block letter.  The criteria for the block letter can be found on our website under the "Academics" heading.  For your convenience, the link can be found HEREhttps://tinyurl.com/mhhsacademicblock

Once you review the criteria, please follow the link on the web page to fill out the application to receive your block letter.

The first time students are eligible to apply for the academic block letter is after their Sophomore (10th grade) year.

New Transcript View in Aeries

Your Aeries Parent and Student Portals now have a new way of viewing your high school transcripts.  Your transcript is a record of all of the classes you've taken and the grades you've received during your high school years.  The new view of your transcripts is much easier to view, and is very similar to the official transcript.  Check out our video above that walks you through how to access the new transcript view.

Esports Possibility at MHHS

This year, the governing body of the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) approved its first ever electronic competitions( ESports) .  What this means is that it would be possible to start our first ESports team here on our campus. Some of the games that are played include:  League of Legends, Smite, and Rocket League.  Before we officially look into getting Esports going I want to know what the interest in participating in Esports is on our campus.

Before we officially begin an ESports team at MHHS, we need feedback from our students to see if there is an interest in this activity.  If you would be interested in being a part of the ESports team here at MHHS, please fill out the following interest form:

 ESport Interest Form

If you would like additional information about the CIF ESports initiative, we encourage you to visit the CIF ESports website here:  https://cifstate.org/esports/index

Testing Center Improvements

Students and parents will notice something new about our testing center, and virtual testing protocols with your teachers this semester.  In an effort  to improve security of our tests, and to increase the integrity of our online and distance learning programs this year and in the future, you'll find that there are some changes in the remote testing protocols this semester:

  • Students will need the use of an external camera so that proctors can see the student, their workspace and the screen of the computer they are using (cell phone, tablet, etc.)
  • Students MUST use their school issued Chromebook to take all tests
  • As soon as ID cards are distributed, students will be required to show the proctor their ID card.
We appreciate your help as we implement these new procedures.

DECA Judges Needed--NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY

Mountain House High School DECA chapter is very pleased to be sending 97 DECA students to the NorCal regional competition this year. This is exciting for our chapter since it is the largest field of competitors since the inception of DECA at Mountain House. To help support our students, we are in need of at least 10 judges for the competition.  The NorCal competition this year is virtual; therefore, all judging will be virtual.  Being a judge includes the following:

  • Reviewing student-submitted business proposals and evaluating them using a points system
  • Providing feedback to the students regarding strengths and opportunities for growth regarding their business proposal plans
  • Reviewing student-submitted role play videos where students present a business proposal on a selected scenario

Judges will receive information prior to judging on the criteria that they need to be looking for and strategies for judging effectively.  If you are interested in being a judge and supporting our DECA students, please contact Dr. Kerry Moquett at kmoquett@lammersvilleusd.net with your name and contact information.

Biomedical Innovations Student Project--Carpal Tunnel

Each year our fourth year Biomedical Innovations students are required to choose a biomed related issue and create a plan to inform and educate people about that issue.  Due to distance learning, our students this year are using our newsletter to communicate this information with our community.

Here's some information about our first related issue, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
