"What's My Grade?" Episode 3

Welcome to episode 3 of “What’s my Grade?”  Today’s episode will cover the following FAQ:

“Mr. Fobert, can you explain what you mean about “CR” and “NC” grades and GPA calculations?”

Sure!  It is important that you understand how your GPA is calculated.  In a typical semester, grades given on a report card are assigned a point value.
The point value breakdown looks like this:
A = 4
B = 3
C = 2
D = 1
F = 0
GPA is calculated by adding up the point values of each of the classes that you take, and dividing it by the number of classes you took that semester.
In addition to the GPA students receive at each semester, students receive 5 credits per class completed each semester they complete a class with a “D” grade or above.  These credits add up over their high school career and are used as a running total towards the required number of credits to graduate from high school, and as credits that are required by colleges and universities for acceptance into their schools.
For an example, take a look at the sample below:

Semester 1 Grades
Course     Grade             Point Value           Credits Attempted            Credits Earned
World Hist   A                          4                                    5                                          5
PE               B                          3                                    5                                          5
Math 2        C                          2                                    5                                          5
Chemistry   D                          1                                    5                                          5
Art              A                          4                                    5                                          5
Spanish 2    A                          4                                     5                                         5
Total Points  18 Credits Attempted  30          Credits Earned   30
Total GPA:  3.0  (18 points divided by 6 classes)
**For students who take honors or AP courses, the point values are increased for grades at the A, B and C level and are reported as a separate “Weighted” GPA.  (A is worth 5 points, B is worth 4 points, C is worth 3 points)

As a side note, the overall GPA calculation is calculated by adding all courses students have taken over the course of their entire high school career, adding up the point values, and dividing by the total number of courses taken over their entire high school career.

Please also remember that OFFICIAL GPA’s are only calculated using SEMESTER GRADES.  Grades received at Quarters and Progress Reports are for progress monitoring only.  Only semester grades are used for permanent record and transcript purposes.

Okay Mr. Fobert, now that I understand how GPA is calculated, tell me how these “CR” and “NC” grades will affect my GPA calculation.

GPA will be calculated differently with the “CR” and “NC” grades for this semester due to distance learning.  Here are the main differences:

  • “CR” grades will show as credits attempted and credits earned, but are not worth point values, and are not calculated into the GPA calculation at all.
    • Students will automatically receive this grade for any grade at “C, B, or A” levels.
    • Students can replace the CR grade with a letter grade by requesting a letter grade. (Letter grade request form will be available on 5/15/20 at 5:00 P.M. and will be due Monday 5/18/20 at 11:59 P.M.  LETTER GRADE REQUESTS ARE FINAL)
  • “NC” grades will show as not attempted and will not be awarded credits.  This grade will also be eliminated from the grade calculation for GPA completely.

Semester 2 Grades
Course       Grade               Point Value           Credits Attempted        Credits Earned
World Hist    A                         4                               5                                      5
PE                 A                         4                               5                                      5
Math 2         CR                        0                              5                                      5
Chemistry    NC                       0                               0                                      0
Art                 B                        3                               5                                      5
Spanish 2      C                         2                               5                                      5
Total Points  14 Credits Attempted  25          Credits Earned   25
Total GPA 3.25 (Total Points divided by 4)

*Note that since the student was awarded “CR” for one class and “NC” for another class that the total point value total was lower, but was only divided by the number of classes for which they had letter grades.
**Also note that because the student received 0 credits earned for 2nd semester Chemistry, while it did not affect semester GPA, the student will now need to retake that class either during summer school, online, or in future school years.

Now that you are informed about how GPA will be calculated, stay tuned for tomorrow’s installment of “What’s My Grade?” where we will discuss how the grades you choose on this semester’s report card may impact you when you apply for college.

"What's My Grade" - Episode 2

Today’s “What’s My Grade update FAQ is:  “How is my GPA affected when I get a Credit (CR) or No Credit (NC) on my transcript?

This is a great question!

Here’s what happens if you had a C or better on your 3rd quarter report card:

  • You should continue doing all of your work to maintain or improve your grade until the end of the semester.
  • Students who had a “C” grade or above at the quarter will AUTOMATICALLY be given Credit for the class.  A credit grade on the transcript will show up as “CR” instead of a letter grade.
  • A “CR” grade will also show that you attempted 5 credits during the semester, and that you completed 5 credits for that class.
  • One big difference with a “CR” grade is that it will not factor into your GPA calculation at all.
  • Remember, on Friday 5/15/20, you can look at your grade in Canvas, and if the letter grade is a C or above, you will have the opportunity to request a letter grade to be placed on your transcript.  The grade posted on this day is final and non-negotiable.  If you choose a letter grade it WILL be counted in the GPA calculation.  (Letter grade request form will be available on 5/15/20 at 5:00 P.M. and will be due Monday 5/18/20 at 11:59 P.M.  LETTER GRADE REQUESTS ARE FINAL)
  • You will have the opportunity to choose letter grades or Credit for each individual class.

Here’s what happens if you had a D of F on your 3rd quarter report card:

  • You should do all of the work assigned to you to bring your grade up above a C grade so that you can either receive a “CR” grade or request a letter grade!
  • Students with 3rd quarter D grades that maintain the D grade will be automatically advised to request a letter grade so that you receive credit for the course towards graduation.  D grades WILL be calculated in the student’s GPA as normal.  It is important to request this letter grade so that students receive the credit towards graduation.
  • Students with a 3rd quarter F grade who maintain the F grade through the end of the semester will AUTOMATICALLY be given a No Credit grade on their transcript.  This grade will show up on the transcript as “NC” instead of a letter grade.
  • An “NC” grade will show that you never attempted these 5 credits during the semester, and will show zero credits for the course.
  • The “NC” grade will not factor into the GPA calculation.

Stay tuned for another edition of “What’s My Grade?”  Tomorrow’s edition will discuss what we actually mean when we’re talking about GPA calculations, what that means for your semester and overall GPA calculation, and how colleges and universities will look at your Spring 2020 GPA and overall GPA when you apply for college.

"What's My Grade?" - Episode 1

Last week’s communication about grades was full of information, and we want to continue to highlight pieces of that communication so that you can understand the policy and procedure for grading during distance learning.  We’ll be doing this by visiting some frequently asked questions we’re hearing on a regular basis.

Today’s “What’s My Grade?” update FAQ is:  “I thought my grade couldn’t go down during distance learning!  Why is my grade dropping in Canvas?”

This question was answered in our “Distance Learning Grading Process” communication on 4/23/2020.  It says this:
“Teachers are continuing to grade work as it is turned in as a means for providing feedback to              parents and students about their progress in the course in the event that they request a letter
grade.  It is possible a grade in Canvas or Edgenuity may go down from the 3rd quarter
grade...We will not put a letter grade on any student’s transcript that is lower than their 3rd
quarter letter grade. Students whose grades drop below the 3rd quarter grade will automatically
receive the designation of Credit on their transcript.”

“Mr. Fobert, that’s confusing, what does that really mean?”
What this means is:

  • Teachers are assigning work and you are expected to do it.
  • Teachers will continue to grade work and input grades in Canvas.
  • Your grade in Canvas can go up or down depending on the quality and quantity of work you turn in.
  • If you had a passing grade at the Quarter and your grade drops at all, you will automatically be given Credit “CR” for your semester grade and you will not have the opportunity to request a letter grade.
  • If you did not have a passing grade at the Quarter, you need to work to get it up to a passing grade before the end of the semester.

Stay tuned for future episodes of “What’s My Grade?”

MHHS Distance Learning Grade Process

Thank you for your patience as the MHHS Administration and faculty have worked together to create a procedure for choosing your grading option at the end of this semester.  Reminder:

Here are a few highlights that may answer some questions you have:

  • The default semester mark is Credit/No Credit, but a student can select (per class) if they would prefer a letter grade to be used.
  • Students will have the opportunity to see their end-of-semester letter grade BEFORE choosing whether they want Credit/No Credit or a letter grade.
  • Students may choose the letter grade option per class.  We are able to put some letter grades and some Credit/No Credit on the same student’s transcript
  • The choice to select a letter grade is final and cannot be changed once the window closes at 11:59pm on 5/18/2020.
  • Teachers are continuing to grade work as it is turned in as a means for providing feedback to parents and students about their progress in the course in the event that they request a letter grade.  It is possible a grade in Canvas or Edgenuity may go down from the 3rd quarter grade, however, those letter grades are informative at this point since you will have grade choice options at the end of the semester.
    • We will not put a letter grade on any student’s transcript that is lower than their 3rd quarter letter grade. Students whose grades drop below the 3rd quarter grade will automatically receive the designation of Credit on their transcript.
    • Here is the statement sent out by Lammersville Unified School District on Wednesday, April 15, 2020: “As stated by California Department of Education, for the duration of school closure due to COVID-19, ‘students shall be held harmless’.  This means that assignments and assessments during the time of distance learning can improve a student’s final grade, but may not lower it.”
  • All students are expected to complete the work provided for the remainder of this semester.  Our guidance to students is to complete your work, see what your grade is at the end of the semester, and make the decision about your grade at that time.

MHHS Distance Learning Grade Process Timeline

May 4, 2020
Counselors will send out a chart with information we have received from colleges about the impact of this semester on a student’s college portfolio.

2020 Graduation Update

Mustang Ohana,

We would like to take a moment to communicate information in regards to graduation ceremonies for the class of 2020.  Due to the continued physical distancing mandates from the state and county, we are announcing an official postponing our graduation ceremonies.  Using information that the LUSD administration gathered from a survey sent to our Senior Class and their families, we will be planning graduation ceremonies for early August. We will be communicating a specific date as soon as we have more information about physical distancing guidelines from the county, state, and federal government.

We want to assure you that our district and school are here to support you during this difficult time. MHHS Faculty and Staff still have plans to honor the class of 2020 during the Month of May to acknowledge them for their hard work over the past four years.  We plan on recognizing students virtually for our “Senior Honor Night,” and we plan on physically delivering awards, caps and gowns, and other commemorative items directly to students at their homes.  Also, please look for future information about how we intend to commemorate our original graduation date even though the actual ceremony has been postponed.

While the current state of affairs in our world do not allow us to celebrate as we have in previous years, our aim is to recognize the class of 2020 in a way that honors their hard work, perseverance, and their school pride.

We appreciate your patience and the community’s feedback, support, and ideas during this time.  We encourage our entire Mustang Ohana to always remember who you are, what you represent, and to show your Mustang Pride!

Speech and Debate Virtual Tournament of Champions

Well friends, this quarantine is tough for all, but there is a bright spot in the midst of it all ... (ready for it?!) Speech and Debate still got to compete! Yahoooo! Yipppeee!!! Yaaassss!

This past weekend the Tournament of Champions, usually housed at the University of Kentucky, was hosted online, the first e-national tournament, and thus our students who had earned the right to be there were still able to compete virtually!

It was truly impressive ... they dressed in suits, took video of the platform speeches and even debated live ... it was so incredible to see and be a part of ... literally they were making speech history!!

Please congratulate the following participants … as they are incredible representatives of Mountain House High School Speech and Debate: Astrid Mann, Nabheea Ali, Vishnu  Matta, Komal Vij, Manreet Sohi, Aashril Shazar, Dhruva  Kolikineni. Rithanya Sivasubrahmanian, Anisha Yeddanapudi, Brianna Do, Elizabeth Su and Ananya Domala … they are phenomenal!

To the orators who competed, (Manreet, Nabeeha, Rithanya, Komal, Astrid and Brianna) they were outstanding! They delivered speeches not in front of the usual crowds, but recorded them alone in their homes proving that “virtual communication is vital communication.” Telling the world that no virus can take what matters from them, their voice. They were, and are the, epitome of the definition of a champion.

To the Expository Experts … Lizze and Ananaya … they were true detectives, figuring out the details of research and important information that the world needed to know, then finding the ways to share that with the world … their dedication to excellence makes them a champion of information, interest, and ingenuity!

To our lone lady … the amazing Anisha, the only extemporaneous speaker to ever attend the TOC from MHHS… let alone being the first female extemper … she has continually forged her way through the field, fought her way to the top and showed her competency and character as she tackled the tough topics; what an awe-inspiring young lady championing representation in both beauty and brains!

Dhruva and Aashril became the second Mountain House team to ever qualify for the prestigious tournament. They debated well throughout the tournament, battling tough competition and early morning wake-up calls due to the challenge of debating folks in different time zones. Ultimately they went 4-3, falling just short of clearing to the elimination rounds; which despite that, is a really outstanding performance at the premier debate tournament in the country, and a fitting cap to their debate careers. They have shown their resilience and flexibility as they attempted a new challenge and rose to the occasion, if that is not the definition of a champion, I am not sure what is!

But wait, there is more! Please shout out to VISHNU MATTA for taking 19th in the country, as he advanced to the quarter final rounds of the Tournament of Champions! He has made us laugh all year long, but his success is no laughing matter as he is something to aspire to be like, always bringing a smile to your face and a fierceness to rounds!

Congratulations to all who cleared at the 2020 Virtual Tournament of Champions, the E-TOC … so proud of you and so proud to be a Mustang!

Distance Learning Grading Procedures

Below is a message for students and parents districtwide regarding grading during this period of Distance Learning. Please read carefully. We will be communicating with you over the next week with additional details and procedures as we get closer to the end of the school year:

As we continue to deliver Distance Learning, the California Department of Education requires districts to assign work that will provide continuity of learning and preparation for the next grade level or course. Lammersville Unified School District {LUSD} teachers will continue to provide assignments, grades and additional feedback to help improve student learning.  This includes assignments and grades on new essential standards or concepts.
The transition to Distance Learning, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is a time students have been
“held harmless” in regards to grades. As we continue Distance Learning through the end of the 2019-20
school year, it is important for parents to continue to provide support and assistance to their learner.
As stated by California Department of Education, for the duration of school closure due to COVID-19,
“students shall be held harmless”.   This means that assignments and assessments during the time of
distance learning can improve a student’s final grade, but may not lower it. This does not mean students get a
free pass; on the contrary, students need to continue to “go to school” virtually and keep up with their
assignments and learning. Making sure your child completes assigned work will ensure your child is ready for
the next grade level or course. LUSD appreciates your time and effort committed to supporting your student.
Students who fail to follow the Distance Learning model will receive parent contact by the teacher and/or site
administrator. Again, there is no free pass, students are expected to continue their role as an active participant
in Distance Learning.
  • K-8 Third Trimester grades: “Credit” or “No Credit”
    • “Credit/No credit” will be calculated using the grade the student had at the 2nd
trimester and maintained or improved by demonstration of learning on 3rd trimester grades.

  • 9th-12th Semester grades:  “Credit” or “No Credit” for their final grade.
    • MHHS students may request to receive a letter grade if desired.  Further details about the request
procedure will be sent separately to all high school students.
    • Once a letter grade request is made, it cannot be changed.
    • NOTE:  For information on the impact of a Credit/No credit grade for college admissions, please
click here or contact your high school counselor.
    • Final grades will be calculated using the student’s 3rd quarter grade and the 4th quarter work
Questions about grades should be directed to your child’s teacher.  If additional assistance is needed, please
contact your school site administrator or high school counselor.

New Updates for Distance Learning

Mustang Ohana,

As all of you likely know, due to the directives given to us by the Governor, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the County Superintendent, and our own School district, we have been directed to continue distance learning to the end of the current school year, May 22nd. While we understand how upsetting this can be, we want to reach out to assure you of the deep love and concern we have for each of you.  Mountain House High school and Lammersville Unified School District administration, faculty, and staff are hard at work making plans to continue high-quality learning experiences for students.

ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS DURING DISTANCE LEARNING
Our focus for the remainder of the school year will be on helping students learn and master the essential skills they need to meet their goals for preparing for college, careers, and beyond.  Please be aware that it is essential to ensure that students log in to Canvas daily to complete work assigned by each of their teachers. All of your teachers are posting a weekly lesson plan at the beginning of each week in the "Announcements" section of each class in Canvas.  This plan will continue to detail the assignments you need to complete on a daily basis. Additional information, assignments, and links can be found within each of your classes in Canvas.  In some cases, your work may be in another online tool (Discovery Math, Edgenuity, etc.).
Parents can also help keep track of their student's progress by signing up for a Canvas Parent Portal account.  Check out this link for instructions on how to set that up: tinyurl.com/mhhs-canvas
During distance learning, our teachers are teaching new lesson content to students that would normally have been taught in their classrooms. For many of our teachers, they are teaching this new lesson content via Zoom or Google Meet and this is the first time your children are seeing this lesson content. They are also providing virtual office hours daily for students to ask questions and seek additional support from lessons that were taught that day and/or assignments given to them. To receive instruction on new lesson content, it is very important students participate in all of their scheduled online learning lessons with their teachers. Live lessons are also being recorded so that students who are unable to attend can review the information later in the day.  These online lessons and work are not optional.  They are an integral part of how our teachers are delivering instruction to students.  Lessons and work given for each day should be completed on a daily basis so that students do not fall behind.

EXTRACURRICULAR AND COCURRICULAR SPORTS AND ACTIVITIES
In addition to the cancellation of face-to-face instruction for the remainder of the school year, the California Interscholastic Federation has announced the official cancellation of extra-curricular sports for the Spring season. Students who were involved in a spring sport this year will be given credit for the spring sports season.  Coaches will be reaching out to student-athletes to provide encouragement and support so that students can stay healthy and continue conditioning for the remainder of the season. We look forward to Spring Sports in 2021 for these students to participate again. All other extra-curricular and co-curricular activities for this school year have also been canceled.  Preparation for Fall 2020 sports season will be communicated as soon as conditions allow.

GRADUATION 2020
We are especially dedicated to coming up with ways that we can honor the class of 2020 and celebrate the end of their high school career.  While we will be unable to have the traditional graduation ceremony at the end of May as we had planned, the high school administration, district administration, and teachers are gathering feedback and developing plans to provide graduation festivities for this year’s senior class.

COUNSELING AND ADDITIONAL SUPPORT
In addition to the resources we have for our students academically, we want our families to know that our counseling department is continuing to support our students academically, socially, and emotionally.  We encourage you to look for their communications about virtual college preparation events, virtual social activities, and emotional wellness tips during this time. It is important for our students and families to maintain a focus on wellness in all aspects of our students’ lives during this time.  Please visit our counseling department website at tinyurl.com/mhhs-counseling or their new counseling department blog at http://mhhscounselingblog.weebly.com/.

GRADING AND ASSESSMENTS
More information will be shared in the coming week that detail the specifics about how students will be graded and awarded their credits at the end of the semester.  This will include specifics about outstanding redo/retake opportunities and future tests and assessments.

RETURNING AND RETRIEVING ITEMS
Additional information that will come out in the coming weeks includes procedures for retrieving student personal belongings, medications, P.E. clothing, etc.  Additional procedures for the return of school materials such as library books, musical instruments, classroom materials, and technology items will also come at a later date.

OFFICE HOURS AND TECH SUPPORT
As a reminder, our daily school site office hours will be from 9:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M, Monday through Friday.  To maintain social distancing, we encourage you to contact us virtually, and in-person only when necessary. Secretaries and administration are consistently checking emails, and school phones are answered during business hours.  You can find contact information on our website: mhhs.lammersvilleschooldistrict.net.  Students who need assistance with their school issued Chromebook by emailing support@lammersvilleusd.net or by calling 209.836.7499.

While this year is anything but typical, we aim to provide instruction, support, and activities for students that keep us connected, healthy, and successful for the remainder of the school year.  We aim to be true to our “E.P.I.C.” mission statement by Empowering students through Personalization of instruction and curriculum in an Innovative setting where students can Collaborate with faculty, staff, and other students to achieve success.

Aloha,
Ben Fobert

Principal
