Mountain House High School has recently been awarded the prestigious California Distinguished Schools Award. This program recognizes outstanding education programs and practices of schools across the state of California. This award is given every other year to schools who show exceptional student performance for two consecutive school years. Indicators used to measure our performance included test scores, suspension rates, and graduation rates.
In a press release, California State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond stated: "I would like to commend these schools for fighting for a better future for our students, closing achievement gaps, and improving academic performance. Thanks to teachers, administrators, classified employees, and parents working together, these schools meet the needs of all of their students, provide high quality educational experiences, and put kids on a pathway to great careers."
Mountain House High School was one of 162 middle and high schools out of the more than 2600 middle and high schools in the state to receive this award. Together with the successful WASC Accreditation, our recognition as a PLTW Distinguished School, recognition as a Common Sense Media School, our Golden Bell Award for our Early College Pathway, and other recognition we have received, MHHS is proud of the programs and services that we offer to our students.

Happy New (Lunar) New Year
We would like to wish all of our students and their families who celebrate the Lunar New year in the Mustang and Mountain House Community a Happy New Year.
This time of year many of our families who are of Asian descent celebrate the lunar new year. For many, this New Year celebration is the biggest celebration of the year. In 2019 we are ringing in the year of the Pig. Sometimes called "Chinese New Year" this celebration is observed around the world by many ethnic groups. Happy Lunar New Year to our students and families!

Counselor Appreciation Week
This week is national counselor Appreciation week. Did you you know all of the services that our high school counselors provide for students at Mountain House? They're not just there to make sure that you have the right classes on your schedule to graduate, they also ensure that you take classes that make you eligible to apply for college, they provide social/emotional support. They can assist you when you are having trouble with friends or a teacher. They are there to intervene when you are struggling in your classes. We are fortunate to have our counselors looking out for the best interest of our students at MHHS. Find some time this week to thank your counselor for all of the hard work that they do.
DECA Wins for MHHS
The Mountain House High School DECA students participated in the regional competition conference on January 18th through the 20th. DECA helps students prepare for careers in business, and is a part of the MHHS CTE Business Pathway. All students who participated competed in at least 2 events.
We are pleased and proud to announce that two of our students placed third overall in one of their competitions. They competed as a team in role play for Travel and Tourism. They had to speak as a team to a business scenario in this category and present to a judge. And the winners are:
Aditya Lakkaju and Aashril Shazar
They received coveted "glass" trophies for being in the top 3 overall in this category.
This is a first for all of these students in competition and for them to place is exciting. Two of the DECA students are going on to State Completion next month to qualify for the International competition.
We look forward to more competition wins by our DECA students. Special thanks goes out to our DECA Adviser, Dr. Kerry Moquett.

Black History Month
Did you know that February is Black History Month? Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926. We owe the celebration of Black History Month to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Dr. Woodson was born to parents who werre former slaves, and he spent his childhood working in the Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age 20. He graduated within two years and later went on to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard. The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black American population. Dr. Woodson decided to take on the challenge of writing black Americans into the nation's history. He established the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History in 1915, and later founded a widely respected journal of African American History. Mountain House High School remembers and thanks Dr. Woodson for his contributions as we celebrate Black History Month.
