Exchange Student Host Family Needed ASAP

Did you know that Mountain House High School has several exchange students from around the world this year?   We have students from Spain, Italy, Brazil, Mongolia, Korea, and Germany, and they are such a great addition to our multicultural 'Ohana here at MHHS.  While most of our students have been placed permanently this year, we do have one student still in need of a placement for the remainder of the school year.  Filippo Vario who is currently attending school at MHHS has been staying at a temporary placement, but due to regulations, he needs a permanent placement.  Filippo is an awesome young man who is respectful, is a great soccer player, and very helpful around the house as a contributing family member.  We're looking for a Mountain House family or faculty or staff member who is willing to host Filippo so that he is eligible to stay here in Mountain House for the remainder of the year.

Spelling Bee

 

It’s Spelling Bee time in Lammersville Unified School District!

Dear Lammersville Unified Families,

Bellow, you will find the spelling list that contains the practice words that will be given as part of the classroom, school, district, and the first round of the county spelling bees.  The spelling bee this year will be written only for all divisions. 

On October 18, 2021, all classroom teachers in grades 4-8 will conduct a classroom-level spelling bee. The top 2 spellers from each classroom, will be invited to participate in the schoolwide spelling bee that will be held on  October 25, 2021, at 1:00pm. The top 2 spellers from each school in grades 4-6, the top 2 spellers from grades 7-8, and the top 2 spellers from grade 9 will be invited to participate in the district-wide spelling bee! The district-wide spelling bee will take place at Mountain House High School on November 4, 2021. The top 4 spellers from each division will be invited to take place in the county-wide spelling bee that takes place at the San Joaquin County Office of Education on December 6th and December 8th! Attention all AP Students!

Sign-ups are available for AP Tests from now until the end of October.  All AP exams will be held during the second and third weeks of May.  The expectation is that students take the AP test.  The Students who do not take the AP exam will be subject to an exam similar to the AP test that will impact their grades.  

Payment/sign-up options are as follows:

• Sign-up/pay online at the student webstore by clicking here.

• Sign-up/pay at school in the school bank.

*Each AP exam will be $100. Payment plan options are available at the school bank.  The school bank clerk can set up an incremental payment plan to space out payments for the total cost of all tests taken. A late fee will be applied per the schedule below.

Sex Ed Virtual Parent Night

The Health teacher team at Mountain House High School is hosting a pair of Virtual Sex Ed Parent Nights so you can learn more about the Teen Talk curriculum being used. Sex Ed is part of the curriculum in both 9th grade Health and 12th grade Adulting courses. During the presentation, teachers will provide an overview of the content, discuss tips for parents, and answer common questions. 

MHHS parents with students in grades 9 and 12 are encouraged to attend.

MHHS School Site Council 9/22/21

We are excited to invite you to our first meeting of the School Site Council next Wednesday, September 22, 2021 @ 7:00pm. School Site Council Meetings will be virtual this year and a join link will be provided for each one. 

Each School Site Council meeting will feature a presentation about a specific topic. The presentation will be followed with an opportunity for general Q & A. At our meeting next week we will discuss the various ways we are welcoming students back to campus to best support them after 18 months of distance learning. Topics such as social emotional learning, Advisory, SUCCESS!, and school culture will be discussed.

PSAT/NMSQT - Last Call for October Test

The PSAT/NMSQT test will be offered at Mountain House High School on Saturday, October 16th. All sophomores and juniors are eligible and highly encouraged to take this test to prepare for the SAT exam. All sophomores will have an additional opportunity to take the PSAT10 in the spring, more details will be sent out closer to spring. The PSAT is a multiple-choice assessment of verbal, mathematics, and writing skills.
 
The PSAT/NMSQT is an optional test that provides practice for the SAT Reasoning Test through personalized feedback of student performance with suggestions for improvement. The SAT Reasoning Test, taken later in the junior year can be used as a standardized test in college applications and may be helpful for students wanting to pursue admission to highly competitive colleges or universities. PSAT also serves as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT). Top-performing juniors nationally (approximately 1%) may be eligible for money through National Merit, National Achievement, or National Hispanic Scholarship funds.
 
Seats for the exam are limited and students are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. The cost for taking the PSAT is $20 and can be paid for in person at the front desk or online at the MHHS webstore. The deadline for purchasing a place for the October sitting is Friday, September 17th.

Science Olympiad Tryouts

Science Olympiad Tryouts will be happening the week of September 20th to the 23rd.  There is space for students on three leveled teams, Blue, Silver and White.  In order to qualify for the limited number of spots on our award winning teams, students will sign up for and take quizzes for each event you are interested in.  Students should plan to attend at least one session to complete all six (6) tryout tests for the events for which they are interested in competing. Resources will not be allowed during the tests. An on-screen calculator will be provided as needed. California Women Lawyers (CWL) invites high school, college, and law school students to a comprehensive, 2-hour virtual workshop about becoming a lawyer. CWL will bring together professionals in the field to provide information tailored to students at each stage of their education to navigate paths forward toward a legal career. Beyond fundamentals, this program will guide students toward less talked about resources such as scholarships and mentoring. Students will have the opportunity to meet and ask questions to judges and lawyers who will share their experiences. Become a legend! MHHS is putting together teams for League of Legends, Rocket League, and Splatoon 2 to play in the Esports League. If you are interested in playing competitively, click on the link to sign up for a tryout!

Tryout will be held on Friday, September 10^th at 3:30PM – 5:30PM in Room E108. You must sign up to participate in a tryout (No exception!).

Teams will be notified via email at 6:00PM on September 10^th and roster will be closed at 6:30PM on September 10^th.

COVID Grade Change Options for Fall 2020

This is a follow up to previous communication regarding COVID grade changes. That grade change information was specific to Spring and Summer 2021. However, AB-104 also provides learning recovery options for students who struggled with low grades as a result of distance during the fall 2020 semester.

Letter Grade to Pass “CR” or No Pass “NC” Change Provision

The provision allows any student enrolled in a Mountain House High School course during the fall semester of 2020 to replace a letter grade with a Pass (CR) or No Pass (NC) designation.

Automatic Replacement of D and F Grades

The following action were already undertaken:

• Students who received a “D” in any fall semester 2020 course had the “D” replaced with a “CR” on their transcript.

• Students who received an “F” in any fall semester 2020 course had the “F” replaced with an “NC” on their transcript.

Grades that receive CR or NC on a transcript do not negatively impact GPA. 

Option for Replacing A, B, or C Grades

Any A, B, or C grade can be changed to a Pass “CR”. The process of changing a grade requires that students complete the following Letter Grade to CR Change Application. Students will be able to request the change to “CR” for fall semester 2020, as applicable, and they should indicate the grade level they were in during the fall semester 2020. The change to “CR” grades will not be done automatically and students have to request it.

Completion of the request requires parent approval in the form or an electronic signature at the end of the form. 

Students must be logged in to their lammersvilleusd.net account to fill out this form and will only be allowed to submit it one (1) time.

Colleges and University Considerations

• Grades of CR will award students the credit they need towards graduation and college readiness. 

• Grades of NC will not award credit and students may have to retake these courses in order to graduate, or prepare to apply for college.  

• D grades do impact GPA, but they also award needed credit towards graduation.  Most colleges and universities do not accept D grades for purposes of college entrance.  Students can retake a course with a D grade as a replacement for the D.  

• It is important for students and families to know that the California State University system must accept CR or NC grades without prejudice for any applicant enrolled in high school between 2020-21 and 2023-24. UC schools have also agreed to accept CR and NC grades for purposes of application.

• Some postsecondary educational institutions, including those in other states, may not accept a CR or NC grade instead of a letter grade for admission purposes.

• A list of postsecondary institutions that will accept, for admission purposes, a transcript with a CR or NC grade instead of a letter grade for an applicant pursuant to Education Code 49066.5(b) can be found here: California Department of Education AB 104 Postsecondary Institution Survey Results

***The Pass “CR” grade change option is only available to MHHS students for fifteen (15) calendar days following the date of this notification.***

A lot of you have been reaching out for advice regarding the decision to change letter grades to CR (credit) or NC (no credit) grades. While this choice is up to each individual family, we would like to help you make an informed decision. 

 

The University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems have each published information on how COVID-19 has changed the way they evaluate students for admission. Please click on the links below to access that information.

For private or out of state colleges, we encourage you to check the website and/or reach out to the admissions office of each individual school, as their policies on CR/NC grades may vary.

 

This is a new situation for all of us, so we don't have any special wisdom of experience to offer in this case. However, we can give you a general idea of the pros and cons.

 

Pros: Selecting CR instead of a letter grade may improve GPA, which is a big part of college admission. A higher GPA typically leads to higher admission chances.

 

Cons: The more information colleges have about you as a student, the more it helps them make an accurate admissions decision. Although UCs and CSUs state that students will not be penalized for CR grades, that primarily refers to GPA. We cannot predict how a  college application reader may subjectively interpret a student's choice to take CR grades in some classes but not others.

National Technical Honor Society Applications Now Open

NTHS is an honor society dedicated to recognizing excellence in career and technical education. The NTHS Mission is: To honor student achievement and leadership in career and technical education, promote educational excellence, award scholarships, and enhance career opportunities for the NTHS membership. 

If you are a Junior or Senior in one the the CTE pathways and meet the criteria, we urge you to apply.  Here is a link to the application which lists the selection criteria.   The due date is Sept 17, 2021 3:30pm.  Late applications will not be accepted for any reason.  (Act early to ensure you are on time).
