What:       MHHS Speech and Debate Camp

When:      August 2 - 6, 2021, from 9AM - noon 

Where:     MHHS Learning Commons

In order to prepare for this year's competition season, the Mountain House High School Speech & Debate team will be holding a FREE camp the week of August 2-6.  The camp will be held in the Learning Commons from 09:00-12:00 each day.

The camp is open to all MHHS students who are interested in participating in Speech & Debate this year.  Whether this will be your first year on the team or you have competed with the team in the past, we would love to have you at camp!  You can attend as many or as few days as you like.

The goal for camp will be to introduce you to the various speech events and debate types and to help you prepare your speeches and debate arguments for this upcoming competition season.  All campers will be working with our award-winning varsity teammates and alumni.

If you are interested in attending camp, please complete the attached google form.  All campers will be required to wear face masks.  Please also bring your Chromebook or laptop each day.

Independent Study Options for 2021-2022

On July 12th 2021, the state budget was approved by Governor Newsom. The budget includes a state mandate that requires public school districts to provide an independent study option for all families, TK-12, in the 2021-22 school year. This questionnaire provides families the opportunity to choose one of two options for this coming school year: Option 1) In Person;  Option 2) Independent Study/MHHS Mustang Online Pathway. For more information on the independent study mandate in AB/SB 130 please review the summary HERE.

LUSD is requesting that each family respond to the questionnaire. It is imperative that we receive this information so that we can plan for and staff the Independent Study program/MHHS Mustang Online Pathway. The questionnaire provides families with more than one student enrolled in the high school the ability to respond for each child (up to three children per questionnaire). Students whose families do not respond to the questionnaire will be enrolled in the Traditional, In Person model for 2021-22.

A separate questionnaire will be sent to families with TK-8th grade students.

Join the MHHS Mustang Brigade Marching Band

Attention all 9th through 12th grade MHHS students and any 7th or 8th grade student in Lammersville Unified.  The MHHS Mustang Brigade Marching Band and Colorguard is looking for NEW and experienced students to join the award winning Marching Band for the 2021-2022 season.  In some cases, positions in the band and colorguard need no previous experience.  Take a look at our recruitment video and fill out our interest form for more information https://tinyurl.com/marching-interest-mhhs  (Students already signed up do not need to fill out the form.)

Students Participate in ACE Mentor Program Summer Camps

This summer, several of our students involved in the Engineering Pathway have had the opportunity to be referred to summer camps that have expanded their understanding of engineering principles, and the different pathways that students can follow after participating in our Engineering Pathway here at MHHS.  Through our partnership with Architecture, Construction, and Engineering (ACE) Mentor programs the following students are participating in these programs:

Ramanan Ganesan and Krishna Tagdiwala--CU Denver weeklong engineering camp

Zahra Umar--Thomas Jefferson University College of Architecture and the Built Environment

Om Pandhariepande--Fallingwater Intro to Architectural Drawing

Tanisi has already participated in the Architecture virtual camp through CU Denver, and had this to say about the program:

"I went into the "Architecture in the City" Summer Camp hosted by CU Denver with a great passion and excitement for the field, but also with no previous experience or real-world knowledge about architecture. Through the activities and discussions that took place over the three days of camp, I have learned a tremendous amount, not just about the field, but also about college life studying architecture, and getting from the occupation of a student to an intern and eventually a successful architect. Through many design and build challenges, we learned about the design process and the importance of communication when working with a team, not just through our words, but through our drawings and models as well. On the last day of the camp, we even had the opportunity to present a project that we did with our groups in front of other students in the camp, architecture students at CU Denver, and professionals in the field of architecture to get a small introduction to what our college experience as an architecture major would look like. Architecture was something that I have been interested in pursuing in the future for the last two years, and this camp truly has proved that architecture is what I want to do as my profession."

HOSA International--Unlock your Potential

The theme of the 2021 HOSA Future Health Professionals International Leadership conferences was “Unlock your Potential”.  Twenty Mountain House High School students attended the conference virtually.  They had all qualified based on their performance at the HOSA State Leadership Conference.  Each student competed in one or more events.  In addition to the competition the students attended workshops to improve their leadership and health science skills to “Unlock their Potential”.  Although the conference was virtual, students felt like they had a comparable experience because the organizers worked hard to provide a quality experience.

Some of opportunities that students participated in were 

• Anatomage Challenge: students competed in teams using the Anatomage table to demonstrate their knowledge of anatomy. 
• Virtual Patient Challenge: students competed in teams to interact with and evaluate a patient as if they were the medical team allowing them to glimpse their future and tests their skills
• MindTap Simulation: students were able to access 190 simulations and practice real-world skills from a pharmacy externship, to setting up surgical trays, to analyzing crime scenes.  Students were also able to compete in a scavenger hunt in these simulations with a scholarship as a prize.
• Virtual Dance Party:  It was not all work and learning.  Students also had the opportunity to participate in the virtual Dance Party on Friday night. 

It was an amazing experience after an unprecedented year of change.  We are pleased to announce the phenomenal success of our students against not only other competitors from the United States but also against students from other countries. 

Yun-Rong Ting  - Bronze /Third Place in Healthy Lifestyle (an event where students take a test relating to healthy lifestyle habits, create a portfolio of goals/activities to improve their personal health and present their portfolio to a panel of judges) 

Bhanu Surabi Upadhyayula, Vedika Kanaki,  Isha Suba   - Bronze/Third Place in Community awareness (an event where the students work as a team to promote understanding and change related to an issue of their choice.  This group focused on Carpal Tunnel Syndrome)

The students above are eligible for a $1500 summer scholarship for the Leadership Initiative Summer program.

MHHS Speech and Debate Nationals

Last week, MHHS Speech and Debate took 16 students to the virtual National Speech and Debate Tournament.  This is a qualifying tournament in which the best students compete from around the country.  It is with pleasure that we announce that two of our students broke through their preliminary rounds and made it to the first set of elimination rounds.  Their success at this competition places them within the top 102 students nationally in their individual events.  Please congratulate the following students for their success in this year's tournament:

This competition concludes the 2020-2021 competition season.  A huge congratulations go out to our students who worked so hard this year, and for our coach Lisa Boulais, who lead the team this year to so many victories!

Juneteenth Holiday

Mountain House High School celebrates with the rest of the nation as President Biden has deemed Juneteenth a federal holiday.  The Juneteenth holiday celebrates June 19, 1865 when Union Army Major General Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas and told slaves of their emancipation more than 2 years after president Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863.  Juneteenth is the first federal holiday to be approved since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was approved in 1983 (citation).  The Mustang 'Ohana is proud to recognize this new holiday and applauds the efforts of our nation's leaders to "recognize our liberties, honor the struggle for emancipation, and send a clear message that we value this significant moment in our country's history"(citation).   

PLTW Distinguished School 2020-2021

Mountain House High School is proud to announce that it is been recognized by Project Lead the Way (PLTW) as a Nationally Distinguished High School for the 4th year in a row.  PLTW is PLTW's mission is a national organization that prepares students for the global economy by providing K-12 Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) programs to public, private, and charter schools in all 50 states and the District of Columbia in rural, urban, and suburban districts.  Each year, PLTW recognizes districts and schools that are empowering students to thrive in an evolving world and achieving exemplary results from their PLTW programs.

2021 Jon H. Poteat Scholarship

2021 MHHS graduate Kean Sebastian was recently awarded a $1000 scholarship from the National Technical Honor Society.  Kean was one of 250 outstanding NTHS members to receive a $1000 Jon H. Poteat Scholarship based on their ability to consistently exemplify the seven character attributes of NTHS – Skill, Honesty, Service, Responsibility, Scholarship, Citizenship, and Leadership.    NTHS honors the achievements of top CTE students, provides scholarships to encourage the pursuit of higher education, and cultivates excellence in today’s highly competitive, skilled workforce.

TechHive AI Summer Program- Free to High School Juniors and Seniors

TechHive AI is an innovative learning program to teach high school students about cybersecurity and ethics of AI. While AI holds great promise to positively transform many areas of society, ill-conceived deployments pose significant risks to people’s rights and safety.

TechHive AI combines STEM and social sciences to teach students about cybersecurity and AI. Using ethical AI

principles (e.g., fairness, accountability, transparency, security), students will explore potential technology and

governance strategies to mitigate harms and maximize benefits of AI in society.

 

Participants learn and develop techniques that can address and mitigate AI cybersecurity threats in ways that adhere to

ethical AI principles. Participants will also get opportunities to share these techniques with their communities, school

districts, and local policymakers. This project is funded through a grant by the National Science Foundation.

INTERESTED IN JOINING?

Who:    High school juniors and seniors interested in AI and cybersecurity and the promises and threats they pose. No

prior computer science or AI technical experience is necessary.

What:    Explore the intersection of AI and cybersecurity, how it can help protect us, and the potential threats it poses.

Work with peers and learn from graduate students at UC Berkeley.

When:    July 19 - 23 and July 26 - 30, from 1pm - 4pm.

Where:    On Zoom, of course! Students needing access to a WiFi hotspot and/or laptop can be provided one.

MHHS Students Place at Regeneron ISEF!

Students in grades 9-12 or equivalent must compete in a Regeneron ISEF affiliated science fair and win the right to attend Regeneron ISEF.  Each affiliated fair may send a pre-determined number of projects to ISEF (as calculated by participation and high school population) to compete in 21 different categories. 

More than 600 individual and team awards are presented every year at the Regeneron ISEF. Each entry is judged at least four times with category awards given in first, second, third and fourth place.

We are happy to announce that Jacqueline and Jordan Prawira each won 2nd place in their respective categories! Congratulations to you both!

U.S. Presidential Scholar 2021 Semifinalist - Sahityasree Subramanian

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964, by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. In 1979, the program was extended to recognize students who demonstrate exceptional talent in the visual, creative and performing arts. In 2015, the program was again extended to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical education fields. Each year, up to 161 students are named as Presidential Scholars, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.

Congratulations to Sahityasree Subramanian who was named as one of the 625 semifinalists selected from nearly 3.6 million graduating high school seniors across the country! We are so proud of you!
